ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has delivered a significant blow to surging energy costs by issuing a notification that slashes the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs 37 per kilogram, bringing much-needed relief to consumers.

This reduction in LPG prices arrives at a crucial time, following recent cuts in petrol and diesel prices, and offers respite to households grappling with the double blow of rising energy expenses and soaring inflation in essential commodities.

According to OGRA’s notification, both imported and domestically produced LPG will now be available at a fixed price of Rs 197 per kilogram across the country. In addition, the adjustment in prices extends to LPG cylinders, resulting in a decrease of Rs 438 for domestic cylinders and Rs 1,686 for commercial cylinders. Consequently, domestic cylinders will be obtainable for Rs 2,322, while commercial cylinders can be acquired for Rs 8,933 in the open market nationwide.

Chairman Irfan Khokhar, representing the LPG Industry Association, expressed appreciation for OGRA’s decision but emphasized the potential for further price reductions. Khokhar proposed treating the LPG industry on par with Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), a move that would enable cheaper rates for LPG in comparison to Sui gas, thereby benefiting a broader segment of the population.

Khokhar also drew attention to the adverse consequences resulting from the closure of the LPG plant operated by Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited (JJVL). The government has incurred substantial financial losses, amounting to billions of rupees, while consumers have borne the burden of exorbitant gas prices. Urgent action is warranted to promptly resume operations at JJVL’s LPG plant, thereby averting further losses and ensuring affordable gas for the public.

In a plea to the Prime Minister, Irfan Khokhar requested that the government extend relief to the LPG sector on par with LNG in the upcoming annual budget for 2023-2024. By prioritizing the LPG industry and implementing favorable policies, the government has the opportunity to enhance affordability and accessibility for consumers throughout the nation.

As the nation eagerly awaits the budget announcement, industry stakeholders and consumers remain optimistic that the government will respond to the calls for greater support. A concerted effort in this direction would pave the way for a more sustainable and affordable energy landscape, ensuring a brighter future for all.
