ISLAMABAD: The federal government has increased petrol price by Rs12.90 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs3.72 for September 8, pushing petrol to a record Rs358.77 per litre.

The Petroleum Division, Ministry of Energy, announced on September 7 that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had revised the ex-depot prices of petroleum products under the pricing mechanism approved by the federal government.

According to the Petroleum Division, the price of Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, has risen from Rs345.87 to Rs358.77 per litre, reflecting an increase of Rs12.90 per litre.

Similarly, the price of HSD has been increased from Rs378.05 to Rs381.77 per litre, marking an increase of Rs3.72 per litre.

The latest adjustment takes petrol above the Rs358 per litre mark, placing an additional financial burden on consumers already facing higher transportation and living costs.

Petrol is widely used by motorcycles, rickshaws and small cars, making changes in its price particularly important for daily commuters. The latest increase will directly raise fuel expenses for workers, students and other consumers who depend on private and public transport for routine travel.

The impact of the petrol price increase is also expected to extend beyond individual motorists. Higher fuel costs can increase the operating expenses of transport and delivery services, adding pressure to businesses that rely on road-based transportation.

Meanwhile, the increase in HSD carries particular significance for the transport sector. Diesel is extensively used by trucks, buses and coaches involved in the movement of passengers and goods across the country.

The agriculture sector is also heavily dependent on diesel-powered machinery, including tractors, harvesters and tubewells. The Rs3.72 per litre increase in HSD may therefore add to transportation and farming expenses.

The revised prices have been determined under the petroleum pricing mechanism, through which domestic fuel prices are periodically adjusted in line with prevailing international market conditions and other relevant factors.

With petrol now priced at Rs358.77 per litre, motorists will face substantially higher fuel bills from September 8, while HSD consumers will have to absorb the additional cost of diesel at Rs381.77 per litre.
