ISLAMABAD: At least 16 Pakistani nationals have tragically lost their lives after a Europe-bound migrant boat capsized near Libya’s coast, off the port of Marsa Dela in Zawiya.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the vessel was carrying approximately 65 passengers, predominantly Pakistanis. So far, 16 bodies have been recovered and identified through their passports. There are 37 survivors, with one receiving medical treatment and 33 in police custody. Approximately 10 Pakistani nationals remain missing.
Many of the victims hailed from Pakistan’s Kurram and Bajaur districts. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and has directed the Foreign Ministry to identify the victims and assist their families. He also emphasized the need for stringent action against human trafficking networks.
This incident underscores the perilous journeys many undertake due to unemployment and economic challenges in Pakistan, often falling victim to human smuggling operations. In January, a similar tragedy occurred off West Africa, where dozens of Pakistanis died when a boat capsized. Some survivors accused smugglers of killing 43 migrants in a dispute over payment. Pakistan later confirmed the deaths of 13 of its nationals in that incident.
Libya remains a significant transit point for migrants from various countries attempting to reach Europe, despite the high risks involved. The recent tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers associated with such journeys and the urgent need for international cooperation to address the root causes of illegal migration and human trafficking.
