The Government of Pakistan is in the process of setting up an expert-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) advisory panel to guide and oversee national AI initiatives, as part of efforts to promote technology-driven economic growth and digital transformation.

The development came during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday, focused on advancing AI adoption and enhancing Pakistan’s digital economy.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the government is prioritising information technology and artificial intelligence to foster innovation, improve efficiency, and strengthen governance.

“The implementation of a digital economy will be made more effective through artificial intelligence,” PM Shehbaz said, adding that responsible and secure use of AI would remain a top priority.

He also stressed the need to ensure data protection and sovereignty while integrating AI into national systems to maintain transparency and trust.

PM Shehbaz directed the establishment of a steering committee to facilitate and monitor AI initiatives, reaffirming the government’s commitment to effective execution of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy.

The meeting was briefed on various steps already taken at the federal level to advance AI development, research, and practical application across sectors.

The session was attended by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Bilal Bin Saqib, and other senior officials and technology experts.

Officials said the creation of the AI advisory panel would help Pakistan align with global technological trends and attract investment in the emerging AI ecosystem.
