ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday called on the international community to play a constructive role in reducing regional tensions and fostering peace in South Asia, stressing that unresolved disputes—particularly Kashmir—must be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.

In a strong but measured response to recent accusations from New Delhi following the Pahalgam incident in Indian-administered Kashmir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace, regional stability, and cooperation with international partners.

The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s offer for an independent, transparent, and internationally monitored investigation into the Pahalgam attack that left 26 people dead. “We are ready for a credible and impartial probe and invite countries like the UK to participate,” he stated during meetings with foreign dignitaries, including Iran’s Foreign Minister and the UK High Commissioner.

The government rejected what it called India’s baseless accusations, describing them as a diversion from the Kashmir issue, and reaffirmed its desire to resolve all disputes through diplomatic engagement.

Diplomacy and Dialogue with Iran
During his meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Prime Minister Sharif welcomed Tehran’s offer to mediate between India and Pakistan. Iran’s President has already initiated contact with both sides, and Foreign Minister Araghchi is expected to visit New Delhi on Thursday as part of de-escalation efforts.

“The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to work closely with Iran for regional peace, development, and security,” read an official statement. Araghchi, in turn, stressed Iran’s commitment to strengthen relations and support regional harmony.

Peaceful Coexistence, Not Provocation
In a related seminar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that Pakistan seeks peace but will defend itself if forced to.

“While we remain committed to regional stability, we will not allow any aggression to go unanswered,” he said. However, he cautioned against “premeditated attempts to escalate tensions through blame and hysteria,” urging restraint and responsibility from all sides.

Dar also expressed concern over India’s unilateral moves regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, calling such actions dangerous and counterproductive. “Any politicisation of water-sharing agreements undermines regional trust and cooperation,” he said.

Military Supports Diplomatic Outreach
Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir echoed the civilian leadership’s stance, stating that Pakistan remains a peace-loving nation but will respond decisively to any violation of its sovereignty. “Our commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness,” he said during an address at the Balochistan National Security Workshop.

General Munir also met with the visiting Iranian foreign minister, where both sides reviewed regional security and bilateral coordination on border issues.

Global Reactions and Support for De-escalation
The international community is taking note. The Kremlin on Monday called for calm, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov urging both sides to “take steps to reduce tensions.” Russia offered to mediate last week and reiterated its balanced relationships with both India and Pakistan.

“We hope that the parties will be able to take responsible measures to de-escalate the situation,” Peskov added.

Pakistan, for its part, has consistently advocated for the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
