Company at a time when lithium and rare earth elements have gained strategic importance because of their use in batteries, electric vehicles, renewable-energy technologies, electronics and other advanced industrial applications.
For Pakistan, identifying domestic sources of critical minerals could potentially support efforts to diversify the country’s resource base and reduce reliance on conventional hydrocarbon resources. However, the commercial viability of recovering lithium and other elements from produced water will depend on the concentrations identified, extraction technology, recovery rates, processing costs and the economics of downstream mineral recovery.
The OGDCL-PINSTECH agreement is therefore aimed at generating the technical evidence required before any larger-scale investment or commercial extraction decisions are considered.
