ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United States have discussed potential long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contracts and investment in Pakistan’s refinery upgradation programme, seeking to expand energy-sector cooperation amid continuing geopolitical uncertainty.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker in Islamabad on October 26, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Petroleum Division.

During the meeting, the managing directors of Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) briefed participants on interest shown by US companies in supplying LNG to Pakistan.

Baker expressed the United States’ desire to work closely with Pakistan to address its energy requirements and highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for American companies in the country.

She also expressed optimism about establishing long-term energy supply contracts, saying such arrangements could benefit both countries and open up commercial opportunities for US businesses.

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik briefed the US diplomat on Pakistan’s measures to maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies amid the evolving geopolitical situation and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Baker congratulated Pakistan on managing its fuel supply situation without experiencing a shortage despite the challenging regional circumstances.

Malik also identified Pakistan’s refinery upgradation programme as a potential investment opportunity for US financial institutions, highlighting scope for cooperation in modernising the country’s refining infrastructure.

He said the two countries were continuing their engagement to identify opportunities for closer cooperation and strengthen Pakistan’s long-term energy security.

The minister also invited US companies to participate in the upcoming Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF), highlighting investment opportunities in Pakistan’s mineral sector.

No specific LNG supply contract or refinery investment commitment was announced following the meeting.
