The federal government has approved the National Wheat Policy 2025–26, setting the support price of wheat at Rs3,500 per 40kg to ensure fair returns for farmers, strengthen food security, and maintain strategic reserves.
The decision was made at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, attended by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, and representatives from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to an official statement issued Sunday, the federal and provincial governments will jointly procure around 6.2 million tons of wheat from the upcoming harvest at the fixed price of Rs3,500 per 40kg. The move aims to provide farmers with fair compensation while maintaining stable wheat market conditions.
To ensure nationwide availability, the policy removes all restrictions on inter-provincial wheat movement. A National Wheat Oversight Committee, chaired by the Federal Minister for National Food Security, and comprising representatives of all provinces, will monitor policy implementation through weekly reviews, reporting directly to the Prime Minister.
“Wheat is not only the staple food for the people of Pakistan but also the main source of income for millions of our farmers,” said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting farmers and strengthening the agriculture sector, calling farmers the “backbone of Pakistan’s economy.”
He added that the new wheat policy was crafted after broad consultations with provincial governments, farmer associations, and agricultural experts, ensuring a balanced approach to profitability, food security, and public interest.
“This consensus-based wheat policy will help promote agricultural growth, improve farmer incomes, and ensure food security for every citizen,” the prime minister said, expressing gratitude to all provincial leaders for their cooperation.
