On International Women’s Day, UNESCO highlighted efforts to expand women’s leadership in artificial intelligence, emphasizing initiatives by International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) aimed at strengthening women’s participation in advanced technologies and innovation worldwide.
Marking International Women’s Day observed annually on March 8, UNESCO underscored the growing role of women in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality in science and technology.
A key focus of the observance was the work of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), which operates under the auspices of UNESCO in Riyadh. The center is working to build an inclusive global AI ecosystem by encouraging greater participation of women in advanced technological sectors and strengthening ethical and responsible AI development.
UNESCO leadership stressed that empowering women is essential for achieving sustainable development and ensuring balanced progress across societies. Khaled El-Enany emphasized the importance of women assuming responsibilities in public life, gaining access to economic opportunities, and actively participating in cultural and scientific advancement.
He noted that enabling women to contribute fully to innovation and knowledge-based sectors is vital for addressing global development challenges and building resilient societies.
In line with this vision, ICAIRE has launched several initiatives aimed at equipping women with advanced technological skills. One of its flagship efforts is the “Elevate” program, which focuses on developing women’s expertise in artificial intelligence and related emerging technologies.
The initiative has attracted around 30,000 participants from more than 100 countries, providing specialized training and capacity-building opportunities to enhance women’s technical capabilities. Through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and global collaboration, the program aims to cultivate a new generation of female leaders in the technology sector.
Beyond training, the program also seeks to establish a global network of women working in artificial intelligence and digital innovation. By connecting experts, researchers, and aspiring professionals, ICAIRE aims to strengthen women’s participation in shaping responsible AI development and promoting ethical technological advancement.
UNESCO officials say such initiatives are crucial for ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence are shared equitably and that women play a leading role in designing technologies that influence the future of societies worldwide.
The organization reaffirmed that promoting women’s leadership in science and technology remains a key priority as countries work toward inclusive development and innovation-driven growth.
