The Sindh Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution declaring the construction of Cholistan Canal and five other irrigation projects illegal, calling them a blatant violation of the 1991 Water Accord.
The resolution, moved by the Sindh government, strongly opposed the new canal projects, arguing that they encroach upon Sindh’s rightful share of water. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah condemned the projects, warning that Sindh will not tolerate any attempt to deprive it of its water resources.
“We categorically reject the construction of Cholistan Canal and similar projects aimed at diverting Sindh’s water share. This is an attack on our province’s rights, and we will resist it at every level,” CM Murad Ali Shah said.

Sindh Warns of Environmental & Economic Disaster
The Sindh government fears that these projects could trigger a severe environmental crisis, exacerbating water shortages, damaging agriculture, crippling the economy, and disrupting daily life. The resolution urged the federal government and the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to ensure fair water distribution in line with the 1991 Water Accord.
“No compromise will be made on Sindh’s rightful share of the Indus River. These illegal canals pose a direct threat to our province’s future, and we will take every necessary measure to stop them,” CM Shah asserted.
Sindh Issues Stern Warning to Federal Authorities
Sindh has warned the federal government that any unjust control over water resources will face severe resistance. CM Shah called for urgent talks between all provinces to address the growing water distribution crisis.
“The people of Sindh will not remain silent if their water rights are violated. Any attempt to seize our share will be met with a strong public reaction,” he cautioned.
Following the resolution’s passage, the Sindh Assembly session was adjourned until Friday at 2:30 PM.
