ISLAMABAD: Bad news for Karachiites is that their electricity bills will increase further from April to June and they will have to pay additional Rs 20 billion on account of electricity price hike.
As per details, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Monday heard the federal government’s requests for quarterly adjustments and completed a hearing process in this regard.
If NEPRA takes decision to jack up the power tariff by Rs 6 per unit for the consumers of K-Electric, Karaciites will be charged in April, May and June bills, and the recent hike in rates will result in an additional burden of Rs 20 billion on consumers.
In the first quarter of last year, there was an increase of 1 rupee 55 paisa unit, in the first quarter of this year, the price of electricity increased by 4 rupees 45 paisa unit.
According to NEPRA, an increase of Rs 4.45 per unit has been requested in the first quarter adjustment of the current financial year and an increase of Rs.1.55 per unit has been requested in the second quarter adjustment of the last financial year.
In the application of the federal government, it was held that the increase of these quarterly adjustments was not received from K-Electric consumers, the increase of these quarterly adjustments has been received from the consumers of DISCOs, therefore K-Electric consumers for uniform tariff in the country. According to CPPA officials, consumers in Karachi will pay an average of Rs 4.76/unit extra from April to June and K Electric consumers will have an additional burden of up to Rs 20 billion.
In the briefing during the NEPRA hearing, it was informed that under the K Electric quarterly adjustments, electricity will cost up to Rs 6 per unit.
The hearing on the bi-quarterly adjustments of NEPRA has been completed, the final decision of which will be issued later.
