The World Championship in Fire and Rescue Sport has emerged as one of the most distinctive global sporting events, blending physical endurance with professional firefighting discipline. The championship, established under the supervision of the International Sport Federation of Firefighters and Rescuers (ISFFR), was first held in Moscow, Russia, in 2002. Over the years, it has grown in scale and diversity, with teams from across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America joining the competition. Notable milestones include the first participation of teams from outside Eastern Europe in Hungary (2004) and the introduction of the women’s category in 2006.
The event’s professional structure has continued to improve, integrating electronic scoring systems, stricter safety protocols, and stronger international cooperation among fire and rescue services. Today, the championship stands as a powerful symbol of humanitarian spirit and international solidarity among first responders.
In a major milestone, Saudi Arabia will host the 20th men’s and 11th women’s editions of the championship in Riyadh from October 26 to November 1, 2025, marking the first time the tournament is being held in the Arab world. The General Directorate of Civil Defense, in partnership with the ISFFR, will organize the event at Prince Faisal bin Fahd Sports City.
Officials confirmed the participation of 21 countries and hundreds of male and female athletes, who will compete across four main events: the hook ladder climb, 100-meter hurdle race, 4×100-meter relay, and the combat deployment challenge, which tests firefighters’ coordination using pumps and hoses in simulated rescue operations. The ISFFR has ensured compliance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards to maintain fairness and sporting integrity.
Hosting the World Championship in Fire and Rescue Sport 2025 underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing reputation as a global destination for specialized international events and reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing community safety, prevention, and emergency response capacity.
