Owing to ‘poor performance’ in promoting the renewable energy in the country, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has advised dissolution of Pakistan Council for Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET).
According to sources, PM Shahbaz Sharif has advised dissolution of the PCRET due to its poor performance for last 22 years. They said the PCRET could not promote renewable energy in the country. They said after the issuance of advice from the premier, a decision has been taken to transfer the assets of PCRET to Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR) of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The PCRET is adjudged to have failed to perform the required services in renewable energy, said sources.
They added that owing to performance resulting in non-promotion of renewable energy in the country, the national exchequer suffered gigantic losses so far.
Pakistan Council of Renew Energy Technologies was established by merging the National Institute of Silicon Technology (NIST) and the Pakistan Council for Appropriate Technologies (PCAT) on May 8, 2001. It is the prime institution in the country for coordinating R&D and promotional activities in different renewable energy technologies.
Sources said that the committee headed by Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Government Effectiveness, Dr. Jahanzeb Khan has completed the preliminary task as renewable energy could not be promoted due to PCRET’s poor performance.
According to available copy of an Office Memorandum dated 27th March 2023 issued by the Cabinet Division, the meeting of a committee constituted on the subject titled as Dissolution of Pakistan Council for Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET) and Transfer for Assets to Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR) was scheduled under the chairmanship of Dr. Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan, SAPM on Government Effectiveness, on 28th March at 10:00 a.m in the Committee Room No 2060, of the Cabinet Division take decision in this regard.
