ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has allegedly expelled Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Sher Afzal Marwat from the party, following directives from PTI founder Imran Khan. This decision comes in the wake of Marwat’s contentious remarks at a political rally in Swabi on February 8.
Reportedly, Imran Khan has instructed senior PTI leaders to revoke Marwat’s basic membership. A formal notification confirming Marwat’s expulsion is anticipated shortly, after which he will be requested to resign from his parliamentary seat.
The expulsion follows complaints from several party members regarding Marwat’s conduct during the Swabi rally. His statements at the event have been described as a “diatribe,” leading to internal discontent and prompting the leadership to take decisive action.
However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali has expressed unawareness of the decision to expel Marwat. He stated that he had not received any such information from the party founder, emphasizing that it is an internal matter. Barrister Gohar also noted that he adheres to all directives from Imran Khan and lamented the missed opportunity for dialogue, suggesting that the government was never inclined towards negotiations.
Sher Afzal Marwat, a prominent lawyer and politician, has been associated with PTI since 2017. He secured a seat in the National Assembly in the 2024 general elections. Throughout his tenure, Marwat has been involved in various internal party conflicts and has publicly criticized several PTI leaders.
This expulsion marks a significant development within PTI, reflecting the party’s stance on maintaining discipline and addressing internal dissent. The formal notification of Marwat’s termination is awaited, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
